CGI Workshops Registration

CGI Overview

These institutes are designed for K-5 teachers and administrators who wish to learn about Cognitively Guided Instruction to teach mathematics. We will examine and discuss the development of children’s mathematical thinking and build upon students’ ideas to best support the learning of math in our classrooms (Carpenter, Fennema, Franke, Levi, & Empson, 2015). The goal of CGI is to foster students’ development as problem solvers who bring skill and confidence to mathematics situations. This professional learning opportunity will help participants elicit children’s mathematical thinking and use it as the basis for instructional decisions.

CGI – Year 1

Participants in grades TK-5 in this institute will:

  • Explore how students think about different types of problems and mathematical operations
  • Examine the strategies that students use to solve problems
  • Explore how students develop number sense through routines
  • Begin to generate ideas for how to elicit and build from children’s ideas in instruction

CGI – Year 2

Participants in this institute will:

  • Explore strategies and structures to facilitate productive mathematical discussions
  • Develop expertise to strategically select, pose, modify problems to support learning goals
  • Enhance questioning skills to support and extend children’s thinking
  • Learn about the development of children’s thinking about fractions and algebra
